The Irons and The Saints have faced each other on many occasions since their first battle in December 1899. During the early 20th Century they regularly battled it out in the Southern League,   meeting again after the Great War in Division 2 of the restructured league. West Ham spent most of the 1920's in the top tier, before dropping again for twenty years, and it was over this period in Division 2 that the Irons started to take a lead in head-to-head matches between the two sides, before Southampton slipped into the third Division in 1953.

In 1958 West Ham once more won promotion, but 8 years later Southampton finally joined them in the top flight. For the next 50 years both teams would remain a fixture in the top two divisions, only  separated for a few seasons here and there. This continued into the days of the Premier League, where the two teams evened out a bit more in their performances against each other - until 2005 when The Saints began the biggest descent in their history.

Having dropped to The Championship in '05 Southampton continued to struggle, with problems on and off field contributing to flirtation with another drop - a scenario that finally played out in 2009 when they found themselves in the third tier for the first time in 50 years after a 10-point deduction for going into administration. This may have been a blessing in disguise as it paved the way for a consolidation of the team under a new owner (and a healthy cash injection), and only a year later the Saints won the Football League trophy - their first cup in over 30 years. Another year later and promotion to the second flight was achieved, followed swiftly by a return to Premier football this year.

This will only be the Irons third match since 2003 against the team that pipped them to the number two spot in last years Championship, having only managed a home draw and an away loss last season. But so far this season the Saints have seemed a shadow of what they were last year, just above the relegation zone with only four points from 21, whilst West Ham have had a creditable start to the season, amassing eleven points and sitting in eighth. But it is the teams like this, whose pasts mirror our own, that we need to beat if we want to keep riding high....

West Ham .v. Arsenal - the history

In January 1906 West Ham crossed the Thames and headed for the Manor Ground in Plumstead for their first game against Woolwich Arsenal in the FA Cup. The 1-1 draw was overturned by a 3-2 defeat at the Boleyn Ground a few days later, and it was 17 years before the two sides met again, with the Gunners having moved north to Highbury and dropped the "Woolwich" prefix. Between the wars the two sides were fairly evenly matched, until the Irons were relegated in 1932, just as Arsenal were embarking on a decade of success

The first post-war game in 1946 ended in a 6-0 win to West Ham in the FA cup, but Arsenal went on to win the league in '48 and '53 before slipping down into a trophy wilderness for the rest of the 1950's and into the '60's. It was during this period, in 1958, that the Irons were promoted to the top flight - and did not lose a game to Arsenal until 1963! After two more losses in '65 and '66, interspersed with a couple of wins, Arsenal then turned the table with a draw in '67 kick-starting a period where West Ham did not win a single game against them until 1975 FA Cup.

Over the next seventeen years the two clubs were again fairly evenly matched on a game by game basis - despite West Ham having two spells in the second tier whilst Arsenal continued their record-holding run of seasons in the top flight (they are currently in their 86th!). But it was after the formation of the Premiership that the Gunners cemented their position as one of the top clubs in the country, winning several honours and even spending the '03/'04 season unbeaten.

And that is the story the stats tell... with only 6 wins out of 32 Premiership games against them, and a 50% loss rate at home, it is clear that this will be the toughest game of the season so far.... Come on you Irons!

It was Christmas Day 1899 when Thames Ironworks first travelled across London to play Queen's Park Rangers, with the hoops making the return journey just five days later. Both of these Southern League First Division games ended in wins for the older and more established QPR before the newly reformed West Ham went on to dominate fixtures in the early 20th Century.

Between the wars the two sides only met each other once, in an FA Cup tie, with a handful of meetings  in the old Second Division during the late '40's / early '50's. It was not until 1968 that the two teams met each other in the top tier for the first time, a 4-3 win for the Irons at the Boleyn Ground that ignited an evenly matched and almost unbroken two-and-a-half decade tussle across the top two divisions.

QPR were founder members of the Premier League, finishing 5th in the inaugural season (the highest placed London club). West Ham won promotion the following year, but over the next three years the Irons only managed to register one win from six games. QPR were relegated in 1996, with further relegation to the third tier 2001, followed by financial controversy leading to the club entering administration. Since then the only meetings between the two sides were in the League Championship in 2004.

QPR finally won promotion back to the top flight in 2011, giving them a year to get used to the Premiership before West Ham returned this year, but with 10 managers in the last 5 years they can hardly be described as a stable club. Indeed, so far this year they have only registered 2 points from a possible 15... and with our old boy "Butterfingers" Green in goal this would be a win to savour!

To say Sunderland has a rich history is a bit of an understatement - in 1895, the year that Thames Ironworks FC was founded, the Black Cats won their third First Division title, going on to win another two before West Ham were even admitted into the full football league in 1919, with a sixth title (their last) in 1936. Over a period of almost 80 years they remained in the top tier (68 seasons in total, accounting for breaks during the war years) until they were relegated for the first time in 1958.

The first confrontation between Sunderland and West Ham was a goal-less draw "up North" in August 1923, followed by a disappointing 1-0 loss at home the following week. Over the next ten years Sunderland showed exactly why they were First Division mainstays, dominating both the home and away fixtures. Post war the two sides did not meet each other again until the 1960's, with the Black Cats fortunes already on the wane - although it still took five losses and one draw before the Irons registered another win! From there West Ham slowly began to overtake Sunderland and although the overall statistics indicate them as having been fairly evenly matched over the century the stats for the Premiership show that in recent years results have been more favourable to West Ham - especially at home.

The first time these two teams met was in the Southern League First Division in October 1905, with West Ham suffering a 1-0 defeat away. The two teams continued to battle in the same league for the next ten years, until the First World War (and the Canaries voluntary liquidation) ended their fixtures.

A restructuring of the leagues after the war saw the Irons admitted into the national Second Division, whilst newly reformed Norwich eventually entered into the fledgeling Third Division. West Ham went on to enjoy a decade in the top flight and it was not until the mid 1930's, when they were relegated and Norwich promoted, that the two teams met each other again. West Ham dominated the fixture over the next five seasons, with only one loss in 10 games, before war once again put football on hold.

After bouncing around between the Second and Third divisions for over three decades Norwich finally won promotion to the top flight for the first time in 1972, putting them back into regular fixtures with the Hammers. Fairly evenly matched throughout the 1970's and 80's, each side seemed to dominate their own home fixture but suffer on the road.

Norwich were one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992, leading the table for most of the season before faltering towards the end. West Ham missed this inaugural season, but after coming second in the new Division One they achieved promotion and the two teams were playing each other again - albeit only for two seasons, producing three draws and one victory for the Canaries. Since then both teams have only met each other in Division 1 during the one 2003/04 season (two more draws, the seaon ending with Norwich promoted from first place but West Ham missing promotion by losing the play-off final) and in two FA Cup games.

The stats suggest a tougher tie than one might initially think - West Ham don't seem to have had much luck on the road against Norwich, with only 5 wins out of 33 away games... and, of course, the Hammers have never beaten them in the Premier league (in fact, the last time West Ham beat Norwich in any league game was 11th April 1992). However, with Norwich struggling to find their first win of the season and West Ham starting to gel, any Irons fan can afford a little confidence ahead of this tie....

Thames Ironworks FC was only three years old when it turned professional in 1898, entering the Southern League Second Division, and it was in the 8th match of the season that they welcomed Fulham to the old stadium, Memorial Grounds. Thames Ironworks won both the home and away games against their London rivals, en route to finishing the season as champions, and continued to dominate the fixture once Fulham caught up with them in the Southern League First Division - five seasons (and a name change) later at the new Boleyn Ground.

In the early 1920's and throughout the 1930's the two teams were fairly evenly matched in the old League Division 2, but post-war West Ham began to exert their dominance as both sides gradually climbed into the top tier. Separated by a division for much of the 1970's and 80's it was not until 2001 that Fulham and West Ham met for their first clash in the Premier League. Despite doing a better job of staying in the top flight than the Irons, and amazingly reaching the final of the Europa League in 2010, Fulham have performed poorly against West Ham in the Premier League with only two wins out of 16 games. That said, 21st century games between these two sides at the Boleyn Ground have predominantly ended in a draw, a result that would probably satisfy the Cottagers more than the Hammers...

Despite being formed in 1877 Crewe Alexandra lingered mainly in the old divisions three and four (with a brief dalliance in the First Division at the turn of this century) and as such didn't play a competitive match against West Ham until 1991, when the Irons scored a solitary goal to knock the Railwaymen out of the FA Cup.

The following year the two sides met again, in the league cup, where a draw in London resulted in the Hammers first visit to Alexandra Stadium, a disappointing 2-0 loss considering the two divisions separating the teams.

With West Ham being relegated from the Premiership in 2003 the two teams were in the same league for the first time in their history. They met each other four times over two seasons before West Ham were eventually promoted in 2005, with Crewe finally succumbing to relegation in 2006.

With Crewe playing in League One there are once again two divisions separating the teams, making this match look like an easy victory on paper, especially considering the head to head statistics. However, it is worth noting that Crewe routed fellow League One team Hartlepool United 5-0 in the first round of the cup... oh, and that the Hammers only ever loss to Crewe was in the league cup with a two tier difference between the teams. Not that we're superstitious...
